New success for Dominio de Berzal with James Suckling’s recognition of five of our wines with 90 points or more

As we said when the ratings of the James Suckling report were made public, we love to do our job and seek excellence from the ground. However, it is also a source of pride to see our work, the wine we care for and make, being recognized by the prestigious critic James Suckling. This year he has rated five of our wines from 90 points with a very satisfactory opinion of all of them.

In addition, the recognition comes twice, since a few days ago the results of the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles were published. In this event, two of our wines have won the gold medal. A letter of introduction that encourages and drives us to offer these wines as a sample of our philosophy of life and work.

James Suckling

𝟗𝟑 𝐩𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐬. Las Laderas de José Luis 2021

Las Laderas de José Luis 2021 is a special wine. In Suckling’s notes we can read that it is a “deep and very attractive” wine. He also states that “it is delicious now, but it can hold its own”.

This is a singular wine by definition. Las Laderas de José Luis is one of the first singular wines registered.  A plot belonging to the Berzal family since time immemorial, privileged by its soil, structure and orientation, provides the Tempranillo grapes of its vines with exceptional conditions to create this singular wine. Both alcoholic fermentation and aging are done, partly in 500-liter barrels and partly in concrete tanks.

𝟗𝟑 𝐩𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐬. Graciano 2023

For Suckling, this Graciano is a wine that is “full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, but fresh and really bright,” as well as calling it a “textbook Graciano.”

This is a single varietal Graciano wine. A rare and singular grape with which we also seek a singular wine. A demanding variety that requires meticulous work in the vineyard to obtain an excellent result.

𝟗𝟐 𝐩𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐬. 7 Varietales 2021

This wine is a limited production. The 1,400 bottles per year of 7 Varietales 2021 contain a blend of a careful selection of seven varieties, all from our winery’s experimental plot.

This beautiful project combines 40% Maturana with 10% Graciano, Grenache, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Prieto Picudo.

Its aging in extra fine grain barrels produces a complex and different wine.

Among its latest recognitions, it stands out as first classified in ‘Great Personal Wines’ at the Rioja Alavesa harvest festival in 2023 and for the 93 points in Tim Atkin’s La Rioja 2024 Special Report.

Now, It adds the recognition of James Suckling, who says of it that it is a wine “Quite complex and well made”.

𝟗𝟎 𝐩𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐬. Selección Privada 2021.

A wine made from a selection of grapes from vineyards over 70 years old. The quality of the vines is expressed in the variety of this wine, made in tank with a pisage system and aged in extra fine grain barrels. For Suckling this wine is “juicy and solid”.

𝟗𝟎 𝐩𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐬. Blanco Parcelas 2022.

For Suckling, this Blanco Parcelas 2022 is “ready to drink.” He assures that it is a “quite full-bodied” wine.

The grapes come from one plot, with a very limited yield in production This is how the 1,900 bottles per year of this unique white wine are made.

Concours Mondial de Bruxelles

Two more wines have been recognized at an international event. This is the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. It is an experience of almost thirty years that has allowed the Competition to become a reference in international wine competitions.

An impartial and rigorous competition with a strong international character. Thus, in 2023, it brought together a panel of 350 international tasters of 50 nationalities, a diversity that contributes to the unique character of the event and to the greater objectivity of the results.

Gold Medal. Dominio de Berzal Crianza 2021

One of the Rioja Crianzas most highly valued by the Guides and the best critics. The grapes come from various vineyards over 40 years old. Highly controlled and selective viticulture and ageing in American and French oak give it exceptional quality.

Gold Medal. Las Laderas de José Luis 2020 As we talked about this wine in the 2021 vintage, this is a singular wine by definition. Las Laderas de José Luis is one of the first singular wines to be registered.
