Rioja Alavesa viñedo

How we remember the walks through the vineyard with our father… At that time we knew they were special, because he told us so, but we couldn’t imagine how special they were.
Nowadays we have our own vineyards in 5 municipalities close to the village. The oldest vines are about 100 years old. Some are planted on higher ground near Sierra Cantabria and others near the river Ebro. Thus, the most calcareous soils are found at higher altitudes, while those closer to the river are more sandy and clay-limestone in the middle zones. The fundamental characteristic of Dominio de Berzal’s viticulture is the respect for the plant and the grapes planted in goblet and trellised vineyards and irrigated only by drip irrigation in at least 80% of the plantation.
Rioja Alavesa is a privileged area due to its soil, structure, altitude and orientation. And these characteristics provide the vines with exceptional conditions.
The aim with their cultivation is to produce wines of the highest quality while respecting the essence of the terroir. With the philosophy of sustainable agriculture and care for the environment, we seek balance in the vineyard, with limited vigour.

CRAFTSMANSHIP

Our productions are limited, with grapes selected from our 50 hectares of vineyards. 80% is Tempranillo, 10% Viura, 5% Graciano and the remaining 5% is distributed among varieties such as Mazuelo, Garnacha and Malvasía.

The grapes are always harvested by hand, allowing for maximum care of the fruit, made possible by the proximity of the plots to the winery. There, the grapes are collected in the hopper, destemmed and taken to the different winemaking tanks. In the case of the singular vineyard of Dominio de Berzal, the one that produces the wine Las Laderas de José Luis, it is previously filtered in the selection table.

The countryside must be loved and lived.
The work of the whole year is palpable in the vineyard.

HARMONY

Sala de barricas Dominio Berzal

Once the fruit has been harvested, it is time for the vineyard to go to sleep and for the work in the winery, fine-tuning the wines, ensuring that the essence of the grapes and our land remains present, endures over time and is transmitted in the glass when the time comes to uncork the bottle.

In the winemaking area there are stainless steel tanks and some concrete tanks. On this basis, we make all the wines in very different ways. Those destined for ageing rest and mature in Bordeaux barrels of 230 and 500 litres, of which 60% are made of American oak and 40% of French oak. It is in the silence of this barrel room that the magic is heard. Our wines are refined in these barrels, ensuring that their essence, above all, endures over time.

We seek harmony in the blending of wine and oak. We taste continuously to ensure that the nuances are the ones we are looking for, always respecting the essence of the terroir and the fruit of each one of them.

We must be grateful for the land in which we live, the fruit we receive from it and the wine we make with the essence we collect in each harvest.
