Dominio de Berzal receives two Challenge du Vin gold medals for Las Laderas de Jose Luis 2020 and 7 Varietales 2021

Great performance of our wines in a new edition of the classic Bordeaux Challenge du Vin competition held last April in the French wine region.

After the good response of these wines in the prestigious report by Tim Atkin that was published last February, another classic competition confirms again the objective that Iñigo Berzal verbalized in the presentation of these and other wines in Bilbao when he said that “we are looking for our space with quality”.

Thus, this year we have won two gold medals in this prestigious competition. Both awards went to Las Laderas de José Luis 2020 and 7 Varietales 2021.

Great trajectory

The two gold medals obtained this edition of the Challenge du Vin confirm our best record in all the editions we have participated in the Bordeaux competition.

This is the second year we have won two medals and the first with two gold medals. In 2017, Dominio de Berzal 2014 won a silver medal and the 2014 vintage of 7 Varietales won its first gold medal.

Domino de Berzal Selección Privada 2014 wins a bronze medal in 2018 and the 2017 7 Varietales achieves a silver medal in 2021. In 2022, the Dominio de Berzal 2019 is awarded a silver medal and in 2023, this same wine in its 2020 vintage won a gold medal.

Las Laderas de José Luis 2020

This is a singular wine by definition. Las Laderas de José Luis is one of the first singular wines to be registered.

A plot of land that has belonged to the Berzal family since time immemorial, privileged by its soil, structure and orientation, provides the Tempranillo grapes of its vines with exceptional conditions to create this singular wine.

Both alcoholic fermentation and ageing are carried out partly in 500-litre barrels and partly in concrete tanks.

From its uniqueness, Las Laderas de José Luis 2020 is a wine recognised and applauded by specialists. The renowned communicator Tim Atkin has scored it in La Rioja 2024 Special Report with 95 points in 2020 and 2021, and with 96 points in 2022 and 2024.

7 varietales 2021

The 48th edition of the Challenge International du Vin will be held on 26 and 27 April 2024 at the Palais des Congrès in Bordeaux. This very Bordeaux competition has been contributing to the international reputation of the world’s wine capital for almost half a century, without renouncing its openness to wines from all over the world.

As they do every year, the juries of the Challenge International du Vin bring together 700 tasters from around twenty different nationalities. They are divided into groups of 4 members, each composed of a winegrower, an oenologist, a distributor and an informed consumer. Their composition ensures that they represent the entire chain, from producer to consumer.

In order to recognise the Bordeaux roots, this edition of the competition has chosen to feature historic and emblematic appellations from the Bordeaux vineyards.
